Perhaps this is your first time using travel insurance. Alternatively, you may have recently acquired travel insurance and are currently perusing your policy documentation, unclear about its entirety. We are available to assist you!

This guide explains the basics: how travel insurance works, how to choose a plan, and how to get the most out of your coverage.

Travel insurance: what is it?

A plan you buy to safeguard yourself against certain financial risks and losses that may arise while traveling is known as travel insurance. These losses can be small, like a luggage that is delayed, or large, like a trip that is abruptly canceled or an overseas medical catastrophe.

Access to aid services, no matter where you are in the globe, is another fantastic advantage of having travel insurance, in addition to financial security. In addition to arranging emergency medical care, our outstanding team of medical and travel professionals can also oversee your care, act as interpreters, assist with misplaced passport replacements, and much more. They even occasionally rescue the lives of travelers.

A few things you should know about travel insurance:

How does travel insurance work?

When you file a claim and it is accepted, your travel insurance will usually reimburse you for any covered financial losses. In order for Allianz Global Assistance to validate your loss and pay you back for your insured losses, you must file a claim, which entails providing documentation of your loss. You have the option to submit a claim using the Allyz TravelSmart app on your phone or online.

In practice, how does this operate? Let us imagine you want to safeguard your forthcoming Cozumel cruise, so you get the OneTrip Prime Plan, which offers rewards for trip cancellation. You have a high temperature and chest ache two days prior to leaving. After diagnosing you with bacterial pneumonia, your doctor suggests that you postpone your trip. The cruise line informs you that it is too late to get a refund when you alert them.

You would forfeit the money you paid for your trip if you did not have travel insurance. Fortunately, you may receive reimbursement for your pre-paid, nonrefundable trip expenses if you suffer from a serious, incapacitating sickness that qualifies as a covered reason for trip cancellation. Once you are feeling better, you file a claim by gathering the necessary paperwork, including receipts from your cruise company and airline as well as details on any refunds you may or may not have received. You can also decide whether to get paid by check, debit card, or direct deposit for your reimbursement.

This procedure operates a little bit differently at times. If you need emergency medical attention or emergency transportation while traveling abroad, travel insurance may cover your costs up front. Alternatively, you can qualify for a set reimbursement of $100 per day for a covered travel delay or $100 for a covered luggage delay if you have one of the OneTrip Premier or OneTrip Prime plans. All you need is documentation of your covered delay; purchase receipts are not needed.

Can COVID-19 be regarded as a covered reason for trip cancellation, as many tourists are wondering? And what happens if you get a major case of COVID-19 while traveling? Can travel insurance help? Nowadays, epidemic-related covered causes are included in the majority of our travel insurance plans (benefits vary by plan and are not available in all jurisdictions).

The addition of covered reasons to choose benefits for specific losses associated with COVID-19 and any future outbreak is part of the outbreak Coverage Endorsement. Please check your Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation for "Epidemic Coverage Endorsement" to determine if this endorsement is included in your plan and what it covers.

There are exclusions, terms, and limitations. The whole cost of your loss could not be covered by benefits. The maximum liability limits apply to all benefits, and in certain situations, sublimits and daily maximums may also apply.

How to choose a travel insurance plan

Allianz Travel Insurance offers a variety of policies, each with unique advantages and benefit caps. How then can you determine which is ideal for you? Get a quote for your next trip to get started. We can suggest many itineraries for you once you provide your age, travel expenses, and departure dates. You can then weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each.

If you are a traveler visiting the United States on a tight budget, you might enjoy the OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan. Benefits for travel cancellation, disruption, and delay are included.

The OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan is a viable option if you have few pre-paid travel expenses and would need insurance in the event of medical issues while traveling abroad. This cost-effective plan does not cover trip cancellation or interruption, but it does provide emergency medical and emergency transportation benefits in addition to additional post-departure advantages.

The OneTrip Prime Plan can be your best option if you want the certainty of having significant travel insurance coverage. When traveling with a parent or grandparent, children 17 and younger are also covered for free by this plan (not available on insurance issued to residents of Pennsylvania).

If you have multiple trips scheduled for the upcoming year, you might want to look into annual travel insurance like the AllTrips Prime Plan. With coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical treatment, lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, and rental car damage and theft protection (available to residents of most states), you can travel with cheap protection for an entire year.

How to get the most from your travel insurance plan

Do not put off getting travel insurance for too long! Right after you have finalized your vacation plans is when it is advisable to purchase travel insurance. Your coverage window will expand the earlier you purchase insurance. Additionally, in order to qualify for the pre-existing medical condition benefit (which is not available on all plans), you need to purchase your plan within 14 days of placing your first trip deposit.

Before you depart, read your plan's documentation. If you are not happy with your plan, you can ask for a refund within 15 days (or longer, depending on your state of residency), as long as you have not departed or made a claim yet. Thereafter, premiums are not refundable.
